GoldenEye 007’s dedicated modding community never ceases to amaze me.

Over 20 years later, they’re still treating us to new mods, some of which are really pushing the boundaries.

GoldenEye WW2 Hangar is one such mod.

Developed by Flargy – with a little help from some fellow modders – it features impressive enhancements over the original game.

And the great thing is that you can play it on an original N64 console using a flashcart.

What’s GoldenEye WW2 Hangar about?

GoldenEye WW2 Hangar is a single-level mod set in a Soviet hangar during World War II.

Axis forces have hijacked the base and kidnapped Dimitri. His knowledge of Axis technology has made him vital to winning the war effort.

Playing as James Bond 007, you must infiltrate the hangar and rescue Dimitri.

You also have to destroy some fighter planes, all the base’s alarms, and obtain stolen weapons.

On Secret Agent difficulty and higher, there’s a bonus objective to complete.

Even when played on Agent, this mission is surprisingly tricky. This is mainly because you have to race against the clock in the second half.

You may also need to attempt it multiple times to work out how to do everything in time.

If you’re a veteran GoldenEye 007 player, you’ll no doubt enjoy the challenge.

Bells and whistles

GoldenEye WW2 Hangar has many new features that set it apart from the original game.

The guard models are custom, and every single weapon is brand new.

Not only that, but there’s loads of them. You come across World War II-era pistols, submachine guns and rifles. And there’s even a tank at one point.

Guards will also try to melee attack if you get too close. This wasn’t a feature in GoldenEye 007, but was added by Rare to Perfect Dark.

GoldenEye WW2 Hangar’s audio is especially impressive.

Using a clever workaround, Flargy has managed to get digital music playing in the background.

You can now also hear Bond’s footsteps. It adds a nice touch of realism to the game.

Otherwise, there are some custom sound effects for alarms. There’s a air raid siren that sounds especially ominous.

How can I play GoldenEye WW2 Hangar?

You can download the mod from N64 Vault.

It comes in the form of an xdelta patch. Therefore, use Delta Patcher (or a similar program) to apply it to a unmodified NTSC ROM of GoldenEye 007.
